Yoga Teacher, Viniyoga Teacher Trainer and Mentor

Kim Burnham

Kimberley Burnham is the founder of KM-Yoga and a Viniyoga teacher, Yoga Therapist and Teacher Trainer dedicated to sharing authentic Yoga in a way that is practical, accessible and respectful of its traditional roots.

Her earlier Yoga journey included many years of Aṣṭāṅga Vinyāsa practice, following her initial teacher training at Himalaya Yoga Valley Centre in India, and subsequent study and training with Manju Jois and other senior Aṣṭāṅga teachers, before her studies led her more deeply into the teachings of Krishnamacharya.

Today, Kimberley's teaching is rooted in the living tradition of Yogācārya T. Krishnamacharya and T.K.V. Desikachar, and she continues her study, personal practice and professional development under the guidance and mentorship of Dr Kausthub Desikachar, the current lineage holder.

Kimberley is a graduate of the 500-hour Viniyoga Teacher Training and has subsequently completed her Viniyoga Teacher Trainer training. She has also completed the taught and clinical components of the 1000-hour Viniyoga Therapy Training, with her final research project currently in progress. Continuing her commitment to deeper study, Kimberley is currently studying Yoga Psychology with Dr Kausthub Desikachar.

Her studies extend beyond Āsana to include Prāṇāyāma, the Yoga Sūtra-s of Patañjali, mantra and Vedic chanting, meditation, Yoga psychology and philosophy, reflecting the breadth of Yoga as a complete and integrated system of practice.

Before moving fully into teaching Yoga, Kimberley worked within the NHS in rehabilitation, supporting people living with neurological conditions, stroke, persistent pain and complex or long-term health needs. This experience continues to influence her compassionate and person-centred approach, particularly in her therapeutic and one-to-one work.

At the heart of Kimberley's teaching is one of Krishnamacharya's most important principles: Yoga should be adapted to the individual rather than expecting the individual to adapt to Yoga. Practice therefore changes according to the person, their circumstances, stage of life, capacity and intention.

Her teaching may draw upon Āsana, Prāṇāyāma, sound and mantra, meditation, Bhāvana and philosophical reflection, with these tools introduced appropriately according to the individual or group. Rather than approaching Yoga simply as physical exercise, Kimberley encourages students to explore the relationship between body, breath and mind, and how practice can support everyday life.

Alongside regular classes for adults, children and young people, Kimberley offers one-to-one Yoga and Yoga Therapy, mentoring, workshops, courses and teacher training. Her particular interests include Prāṇāyāma, Yoga psychology, stress and anxiety, individualised practice and the application of traditional Yoga within contemporary therapeutic settings.

Kimberley remains, first and foremost, a student and practitioner. Her approach to teaching is grounded in continued study, personal practice and the teacher-student relationship, recognising Yoga not as something to be achieved, but as a lifelong process of learning, refinement and relationship.

Yoga Therapist, Teacher and Mentor

Fred Burnham

Fred Burnham is an Advanced Nurse Practitioner with almost three decades of experience in the NHS and a lifelong interest in supporting people’s health and wellbeing. Alongside his clinical work, he has developed a deep commitment to the study and practice of traditional Yoga, bringing together modern healthcare with the timeless teachings of the Viniyoga tradition. He considers himself first and foremost a student of Yoga, recognising that the tradition is not something to be mastered but a lifelong path of study, practice and service.

Fred began practising Yoga seriously almost ten years ago under the guidance of Kimberley Burnham, initially studying Aṣṭāṅga Yoga before finding his home in Viniyoga. This marked the beginning of a journey that continues today through the lineage of Yogācārya T. Krishnamacharya and T.K.V. Desikachar.

In 2022, Fred began studying with Dr Kausthub Desikachar and completed the Viniyoga Prāṇāyāma Teacher Training in 2024. He has completed the modular components of the 1000-hour Viniyoga Yoga Therapy programme and is currently undertaking the 500-hour Viniyoga Teacher Training. His studies continue through the Yoga Rahasya of Nāthamuni, Yoga Psychology, traditional philosophy and Sanskrit, while his own daily sādhana is centred on samantraka āsana, prāṇāyāma, meditation and mantra.

Alongside his Yoga studies, Fred continues to work in primary care as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner and Prescribing Lead. He has a particular interest in persistent pain, musculoskeletal health and lifestyle medicine, and has helped develop non-pharmacological approaches to chronic pain within the NHS. His clinical experience has reinforced his belief that meaningful healing often begins by helping people understand themselves, establish sustainable daily practices and take an active role in their own wellbeing.

Fred believes that authentic Yoga is available to everyone. Regardless of age, experience or physical ability, the practice can be adapted to meet the needs of the individual, provided there is a willingness to learn. This principle of adapting Yoga to the person, rather than expecting the person to adapt to Yoga, lies at the heart of his approach.

Central to Fred’s understanding of Yoga is the traditional teacher–student relationship. While books and online resources can inspire practice, he believes they cannot replace the guidance of an experienced teacher who understands the individual. Through this relationship, practice is gradually refined, questions are explored and the student is supported through both the physical and psychological aspects of Yoga. It is this relationship that allows Yoga to become a lifelong journey of learning and self-discovery rather than simply another form of exercise.

Working alongside Kimberley, Fred brings together extensive clinical experience, a growing understanding of traditional Yoga and a genuine passion for lifelong learning. Together they are committed to sharing an authentic, compassionate and individualised approach to Yoga, helping each student develop a practice that is both sustainable and meaningful.
